As part of a significant design system update, I led an effort to create standards around icon formatting and use across Wells Fargo’s digital properties.

In addition to basics such as standard sizes, padding, clear space, and color, I did a lot of exploration into the idea of relative icon scaling, which is working to make grouped icons appear with the same visual weight, since simple scaling to standard sizes will often not accomplish this.

I also worked to standardize icon line weights, taking into account visual weight at different display sizes. This also tied into a standard system for export and implementation of SVG files for icon display.

The icon design system went through meticulous review and testing with many groups, including technology, web governance, brand, product, and accessibility. It is currently in the process of being implemented across Wells Fargo digital properties.
